Munnar: 14. – 16. November 2019
Nach 10 Stunden Zugfahrt kommen wir viel zu pünktlich in Bangalore an. „The train is always late in India“ sagte man uns noch vielversprechend in Hospet, und ja, der Zug war tatsächlich knapp eine Stunde zu spät abgefahren. Aber im Gegensatz zur Deutschen Bahn (und zu unserem Nachteil) hat es der indische Zugverkehr geschafft, die Verspätung mehr als aufzuholen. Wir wundern uns wie das bei 35 kmh Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit überhaupt möglich ist. Was macht man um halb sechs in der früh in einer 11-Millionen Einwohner Stadt? Wir buchen uns in einen Wartesaal ein und vertrödeln die nächsten 3 Stunden, während wir indischen Männern beim Rotzen zuhören – das machen die hier wirklich gerne, ausgiebig und leidenschaftlich laut. In allen Klassen, der Smog muss ja irgendwie raus.
Wir fahren mit einer Rickshaw in einen Teil der Stadt, der laut Google Maps viele Restaurants bieten soll. Dort frühstücken wir in einem schicken Café und dürfen sogar unsere Rucksäcke den Tag über zwischenlagern. Den Rest des Tages spazieren wir von Cafés über verbotene Polizei-Areale (ups), durch Parkanlagen, zum nächsten Restaurant. Irgendwie auch ganz nett, so zwischen ganz normalen Häusern, Läden, „westlichen“ Restaurants. Irgendwann landen wir in einer Mall für Superreiche und können den Kontrast zum bisher kennengelernten Indien kaum begreifen. Von Prada über Gucci und Marken die Alex noch nie gehört hat ist alles vorhanden, der Ku Damm wäre stolz.
Unser Bus für die Weiterfahrt nach Munnar fährt dann aber wieder vom indischsten „Busbahnhof“ des Landes ab. Eine Straße, 100 Busanbieter, die meisten Busse transportieren statt Menschen eher Ambosse, ungekühltes Hühnerfleisch, Reis. Kiloweise Ware wird auf dem Kopf gestapelt, dann balancieren die Inder eine Leiter hoch auf das Busdach und befestigen die Ware mehr oder weniger solide. Der Geruch von totem Huhn zieht sich durch die ganze Gegend. Die Busfahrt ist dann aber vergleichsweise entspannt. Wir hüpfen in unserer Liege, fahren 14 Stunden durch die Berge und kommen gegen Mittag ziemlich erschöpft am Ziel an.
Den Rest des Tages genießen wir dann auch nur noch die Aussicht von unserem Balkon, die Gastfreundschaft von unserem Host Thomas, und gehen früh ins Bett. Munnar ist ein kleiner Ort im Süden Indiens, mitten in den Bergen und bekannt für seine Teeplantagen und -verarbeitung. Am kommenden Tag fährt uns Anthony, unser Rickshaw Fahrer, von Plantage zu Plantage, wir riechen den Tee in der Luft und freuen uns über den grünen Kontrast zu der Felsengegend in Hampi. Anthony hat ziemlich gute Augen und erspäht sogar wilde Elefanten auf den Feldern – bitte was? Mit Bergziegen oder Kühen hätten wir hier gerechnet, aber dass riesen Elefanten die Teeplantagen leerfuttern ist ein ziemliches Highlight. Leider sehen wir keine Tiger, vielleicht aber auch ganz gut. Nach einigen Stunden erreichen wir die Spitze des Berges und sehen: nichts. Wir stehen mitten in einer Wolke, die uns die Sicht versperrt. Wir beobachten stattdessen Affen und indische Schulkinder, die scheinbar alle zusammen einen Wandertag machen (also: nur die Kinder, nicht die Affen) und lassen uns dann bergab mit der Rickshaw rollen. Anthony empfiehlt uns noch ein Restaurant, dass wohl unser erstes nicht-touristisches zu sein scheint. Das Essen hier ist saugünstig – ein All-You-Can-Eat-Menü kostet 1,20€ – und ist viel zu scharf. Angeblich aber nicht für den Mexikaner unter uns: der futtert die zwei Speisen genüsslich auf, hat aber am nächsten Morgen ein wenig mit seinem Magen zu tun.
Unsere Entscheidung, ob wir den Ort noch einen Tag länger erkunden wollen, wird uns von unserem Host abgenommen: es gibt kein freies Zimmer mehr. So machen wir uns am dritten Tag mal wieder mit unserem Lieblings-Fortbewegungsmittel, dem Bus, auf Richtung Küste nach Alappuzah.
